Teaching the Skills That School Forgot

WHELM Foundation equips young adults ages 19-26 with the practical life skills they were never taught in school so they can build stable lives and strong futures.

We're Sending Young Adults Into Adulthood Unarmed.

School teaches them how to pass tests. How to write résumés. How to apply to college. How to do the things they'll be measured on for a few years and then never need again.

It doesn't teach them how to manage a paycheck so it lasts the month. How to read a manipulator before they fall for one. How to choose a partner with their eyes open. How to set a boundary and keep their job. How to make a decision when they're scared, tired, and getting pressured from three directions.

So they enter adulthood with a diploma in one hand and nothing in the other. And we act surprised when the results are predictable:
  • Credit card debt that follows them into their thirties
  • Relationships they knew were wrong six months in but didn't know how to leave
  • Career paths they fell into instead of chose
  • Mistakes that compound for decades
This isn't a motivation problem. It's a skills gap.
But the skills can be taught.

THE GAP

Traditional Education Prepares Them for a Career. Not for the Life That Career Lives Inside Of.

Between 19 and 26, young adults have independence, but almost none of the tools they need to handle it.

They're expected to:
  • Manage income they were never taught how to budget
  • Build relationships they were never taught how to read
  • Make decisions they were never taught how to weigh
  • Set boundaries they were never given language for
  • Recognize manipulation no one warned them existed
Most programs train young adults for academics or employment. Almost none train them for the life those careers and degrees are supposed to be built on.

That's the gap. WHELM closes it.
THE SOLUTION

Five Skills. Six Weeks. One Adult Who Can Actually Handle Life.

WHELM teaches young adults the things adulthood requires through a structured, cohort-based program built on five pillars:
Each pillar is taught, practiced, and applied. By the end of six weeks, a young adult walks out with something most never get: a working blueprint for the life they're about to build.

SIX WEEKS. FIVE PILLARS. ONE TRANSFORMED ADULT.

The WHELM Life & Relationship Mastery Academy

Each cohort of 25 to 40 young adults works through the WHELM curriculum together: taught, practiced, and applied week by week in a facilitator-led environment built on accountability, real-world application, and peer support.

By the end of the program, participants can:
  • Recognize their own emotional and behavioral patterns
  • Make decisions under pressure without spiraling
  • Communicate clearly and navigate conflict directly
  • Identify healthy and harmful relationship dynamics
  • Set and maintain boundaries that hold
  • Apply financial literacy to actual money decisions
  • Execute a personal life plan with built-in accountability
They don't just know more. They can do more. They leave with a working life plan, a foundation of skills they'll use for decades, and a community of peers who are building real lives alongside them.

 Why This Exists

The WHELM foundation started with marriage. Dr. Shola and her husband created it to help married couples, until two things shifted the work.

Their own daughter approached the age where the world expects young people to suddenly know everything. And Dr. Shola watched documentaries about young adults repeatedly exploited by older predators who recognized their naivety. Both made one thing clear: the moment we tell a young person they're an adult, we stop teaching them. We assume they know how to read people, manage money, spot manipulation, and hold a boundary. They don't. Because nobody taught them.

WHELM exists to teach young adults ages 19 to 26 the five things every adult needs and almost no one is given: Self, Relationships, Money, Direction, and Discipline.

The Cost of Waiting Is Too High

Mistakes Made at 22 Cost You for the Next 40 Years.

The credit card balance that gets buried. The relationship that should have ended two years ago. The job that quietly trains you to accept less. The boundary you didn't know how to set, until the cost of not setting it became too high.

The patterns young adults form between 19 and 26 don't stay between 19 and 26. They compound. They harden. They become the default settings people spend their thirties, forties, and fifties trying to unlearn.

The fix is almost embarrassingly simple: teach the skills before life teaches them the hard way.

That's what WHELM is built to do.
